Under Armour ESPN game recap

Matt Meyer, Blake Ayles, Khaled Holmes and Joe Adams
|
The first Under Armour All-American game was held on Saturday in Orlando and it was a solid start for a first year event. The Trojans had four current commits taking part in OL Khaled Holmes and Matt Meyer, TE Blake Ayles and ATH Joe Adams.
The stat sheet didn't show much for the future Trojans as Ayles and Adams were both held without a catch but that has as much to do with opportunities as anything else. Adams had been playing corner for the first few days of practice and by the time they moved him to receiver, he didn't get many reps on the offense side of the ball and his team seemed focused on throwing to Julio Jones (who did look good, he's a nice player). It was puzzling to see the ball not thrown in Blake's direction more often, I can only remember one ball thrown his way and it was short hopped two feet in front of him. The hardest thing to do in these all-star games is coordinate a good passing attack and it definitely showed today. The good news for Trojan fans is that both players, especially Ayles, received rave reviews for their work in practice this week. Adams also put on a show in a pick-up game of basketball with his dunking ability.
Holmes was probably the most impressive of the Trojans during the game with his excellent blocking and leadership. Khaled was named a team captain for the game and he showed his USC spirit by sporting cardinal and gold leggings during the game. Khaled also danced along with the song "YMCA" during one TV timeout while he was on the field waiting for a kickoff return.
Meyer was expected to see limited action as he returns from an injury and that's exactly what happened. It was good to see Matt out there and getting some work in before he travels to Los Angeles on Sunday to begin USC classes next week.
On the subject of offensive linemen, I was talking with Alex Holmes before the game while we were watching the linemen warm up and both of us agreed that the o-linemen for this game were absolutely huge. It's amazing to see how big and agile these guys are now at the high school level when you see some of the top guys in the country brought together in one spot.
One player who really opened up my eyes in this game was Uona Kavienga, the current UCLA commit who is also considering USC and BYU. In the first half of the game, I thought Uona was the best player on the field. He flies to the ball and his pursuit speed is impressive. He isn't the biggest guy out there but neither was Lofa Tatupu and all Lofa is doing these days is making Pro Bowl teams. It's hard not to think of Lofa when you watch Kavienga in action, that's who he reminds me of. The rumors around Orlando were definitely positive for the Trojans in terms of Uona and his uncertain status with UCLA, a solid official visit to USC later this month could really help seal the deal with this talented player.
Another linebacker still on the Trojan wish list is Jerrell Harris and I thought Jerrell played a solid if unspectacular game. He definitely didn't stand out as much as Kavienga did but you can tell that Harris brings a physical presence and he moves well on the field for his size.
Omar Hunter, the big defensive tackle from Georgia, looked good to me. He is strong and he can get after the passer. Unfortunately, it looks like a longshot for the Trojans right now as the big rumors at the game have Omar all but signed, sealed and delivered to Florida. If Pete Carroll can bring this one in it would be huge because Omar would make a nice plug in the middle of the USC d-line.
One player who was considering USC who gave a verbal elsewhere during the game was wide receiver Deion Walker but, after watching him in action this week, I don't consider it a great loss that he will head to Notre Dame. Deion is a nice player but I'm more concerned about losing a Chris Polk, I think Chris was more of a playmaker.
