Matt Corral de-commits from USC

Well it was certainly surprising news on a Saturday morning in June to hear that the USC quarterback commit had de-committed, and i’m sorry to see it because I think Corral is a good one.

But it’s not entirely out of the blue. We had first heard a rumbling back in March that SC wasn’t 100% set with Matt, and the only thing we were told is that SC was doing some checking after the incident that led to his departure from Oaks. We didn’t hear anything more on it until the rumbling popped up twice in recent weeks. One of the times came when I was talking with Steve Clarkson about Matt’s performance after his camp in San Diego, Clarkson said “It would be the biggest mistake for SC not to take him”.

It’s not clear yet exactly what caused this to happen but for the report to come out that Matt would no longer be considering USC is an indication that the situation came to a head between the two parties.

So where do the Trojans go from here? According to Greg Biggins there has been contact with Jack Tuttle:

Greg Biggins‏ @GregBiggins
In light of the de-commitment of LB Poly QB Matt Corral, #USC has reached out to Mission Hills Jack Tuttle but the #Utah commit sounds firm

Stay tuned for more on this development.

Obviously something went down with his Oaks Christian departure that SC wasn’t comfortable with. It’s a shame to lose such a great talent but I trust Helton & Swann made the right decision.

Matt Corral was an unproven college QB and I’m sure another talented kid, such as the QB from Mater Dei, will step up to join the Trojans. It’s a long time between now and signing day and it’s not unusual for high school kids to change their minds several times during the recruitment process.

YOU TELL ME WHY A KID LEAVES A PROMINENT PROGRAM LIKE AT “OAKS” TO GO TO VERY GOOD L. B POLY? THE FISH WAS LEFT OUT IN THE SUN……. IT NOW STINKS AND IS FOWL. CORRAL IS NOT A SAINT AND HIS CHANGING SCHOOLS WAS DO TO HIS BIG MOUTH AND HIS HOLY-ER THAN NOW ATTITUDE. GOT INTO TROUBLE WITH THE WRONG CROWD AND WAS FORCED TO LEAVE SCHOOL. HE CAN GO AS WE DO NOT NEED ANY TROUBLE OUT OF A STUDENT ATHLETE NOT EVEN ON OUR CAMPUS YET. THE TROJANS WILL SURVIVE WITHOUT THIS BONEHEAD AND WILL RECRUIT ANOTHER QUALITY ATHLETE…….

We need to trust that Helton and Swann know what they are doing. The bar is SO high to follow in the tradition of Darnold, Fink and Sears that even a slight reason, to protect the Trojan QB brand, is to be totally supported.

USC will be okay. Have talent at quarterback waiting in wings…

Unfortunate, I really liked this kid. I hope he can come to his senses and recommits before December. He’s the #2 QB for a reason. Strong arm, athletic, and great pocket presence. Above all, he’s got ball$.

@JOHNNY BOY – don’t know for sure but I’m guessing SC pulled their scholarship due to more information regarding Corral’s Oaks Christian departure.

What leads some of you to feel you can “trust” this coaching staff and administration? Their decisions over that last 12 years have been debatable at best to down-right wrong most of the time. Running off Norm Chow at the height of a dominant run? Stupid. Promoting dumb and dumber to run the offense? Laughable. Hiring Pat Haden as AD? How did that gift horse work for Troy? Handling of the sanctions? Hiring both dumb and dumber AS HEAD COACHES? The latest pending Coliseum debacle? All criminal… Now “trusting” Dumb and Dumber’s protege and Nikias’ step-and-fetch-it? You get what you deserve, in spades?

@NEB4USC – you’re living in the past. SC has a new coach that is recruiting well and just came off one of the best finishes to a season in recent memory. SC also has a new AD who seems to be saying and doing all the right things.

Support your team and eliminate the negativity.

I think in the long run it many be a good thing we didn’t get him. If the coaches felt they couldn’t for whatever reason I respect that and leave it there. We have two good ones behind Donald see I’m ok with it.
